Rubbin, Soerabaja
Dressed as the notorious Dutch military officer of Special Troops, Raymond Westerling.

Rubbin is a member is the Roode Brug-community (the Red-Bridge Community) of Surabaya where young Indonesians dress as
Hollanders to inject new life into the past. It sounds curious, because Surabaya is the heroes’ city of Indonesia. You enter every
kampong through a hedge of bamboo sticks sharpened to a point, with which the laskar, the boys from the kampong, fought the
Hollanders and the Brits. ‘But’, Adi Setiawan, one of the pioneers of the Roode Brug-community, says, ‘that history is forgotten.
Under Suharto we only got history lessons about the kingdoms. The colonial period was left out, as if it hadn’t lasted 350 years.
Only after the change in power in 1998 could we ourselves tell our history again.’
