Mohamed T. has been living in Amsterdam for years. His life unfolds in the parallel, invisible world of illegality. He works in restaurant kitchens or for a tenner at the market, and sleeps wherever he can find a bed for the night. ‘Amsterdam is everything for me’, he says. ‘If a bike falls over, I put it straight. The street is my home.’ Mohamed belongs to the Rohingya, a stateless minority in Myanmar who have been systematically persecuted and murdered. But according to the Dutch immigration service, he can’t prove his identify: being stateless, he never had one.
