Born in Amsterdam, Tima has been stateless from birth. Her parents Mohammad and Alaa are Palestinian and likewise registered as stateless. Two years ago they fled from Syria to the Netherlands from war-torn Syria. In recent years, the number of stateless people in the Netherlands has more than doubled. The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) even estimates that the number of people now documented as having no nationality has grown fivefold. In large part this is attributable to the influx of Syrian Palestinians, whose children are registered as stateless at birth. They can only qualify for Dutch nationality after three years of legal residence in the Netherlands.
