Eduard was born and raised a Soviet citizen in the autonomous republic of Abkhazia. In 1991 he suddenly found himself living in the independent state of Georgia, and a little later on in the breakaway province of Abkhazia – without ever moving house. In 1997 he gave up his Georgian citizenship, assuming he would automatically become Russian. But things weren’t quite that simple. He ended up fleeing to the Netherlands, where he applied for asylum. But his application was rejected. Now he is here illegally, with no job or permanent address. His only ID, an expired passport, was confiscated by the authorities.
